Portman Cup a huge success

This summer, Ipswich Town Foundation’s Boys Football Development Team introduced the Portman Cup, a new tournament style competition. The event ran over 4 weeks, operating weekly fixtures for the teams involved at U7, U8 and U9 age groups.

For the final week, the top 4 teams in each age group entered a Champions League style format, before moving into semi-finals and a final, all staged at Ipswich Town’s training ground on Playford Road.

“We would like to thank each team for taking part, and giving up their time committing to the 4 weeks and hope to run this event again next summer,” Football Development Officer for Suffolk, Tom Rumsey said.

“It has been great to see so many clubs interested in taking part in this, with close to 60 clubs registering an interest. The main outcome from this was to engage with local grassroots clubs, which I think has been achieved.

“It has also been great to see clubs have the unique opportunity to play at Playford Road and hopefully make some long lasting memories.”

Many congratulations to Haughley United U7, Martlesham Jets U8s and St John’s Oranges U9s on the success at their respective age groups.
