Former Newmarket Town footballer Shaun Whiter has signed up to the Tour of Suffolk Cycle Ride, taking place on Sunday 4 and Monday 5 June 2023, raising money for Ipswich Town Foundation and Futurestars Charity.
Shaun, a double amputee following a hit-and-run incident in 2016, took part in the Cycle Ride in 2017 and is returning this year with a specially designed bike that will allow him to pedal using his arms.
To mark his signing up, the Foundation invited him to Playford Road to watch the first team train ahead of their clash with Fleetwood at the weekend, where he was joined by Club Ambassador and Director of Futurestars Charity Simon Milton and Foundation Head of Business and Operations Sarah Dooley. Shaun, a former Academy coach at the Club, had a chance to catch up with former colleagues, as well as meeting manager Kieran McKenna and a number of the first team squad.
“I am delighted that Shaun has decided to take up this challenge with us again,” Simon told the Foundation website.
“Despite his accident he has taken up so many challenges in recent years and this years Tour of Suffolk will be his latest event.
“I will cycle alongside him in his purpose-built hand bike for all 150 miles.
“Together with former teammate Matt Holland we look forward to another successful event raising much needed funds for the Ipswich Town Foundation and Futurestars Charity.”
The Tour of Suffolk Cycle Ride takes riders through Suffolk and Norfolk along countryside and coastal paths to complete 150 miles over 2 days.
Supporters are still able to sign up to the event, with entry costing £125 per person. This cost includes an overnight stay on Sunday evening, refreshments throughout the cycle ride and a bespoke cycle jersey.
